Senior Citizen Discounts- Here Are a Few Ways to Capitalize

The Ways to Get Senior Citizen Discounts

With seniors becoming a larger part of the traveling public, hotels, airlines, cruise lines, and restaurants are now offering special senior citizen discounts.  To find the lowest priced way to travel, seniors can save hundreds and even thousands of dollars if they travel extensively using senior citizen discounts.  While there are so many of discounts for seniors being obtainable, it pays to shop for the top deals.  Furthermore, don’t rule out savings that are offered to all vacationers, as they can at times be better than those expressly targeted as senior citizen discounts.

Three Areas for Cashing in on Senior Citizen Discounts

Hotels.  All major chains have senior discounts for room rates, mostly in the 10% category.  Some, like Best Western, provide a frequent travel club card, which allows you as being a member to accumulate points to earn free room nights and upgrades.  The senior discounts can vary a lot here, as for example 2008 was a time traveling was rather depressed, and discounts went as high as 40%.  Another thing to watch for is the age when discount rates for seniors begin, as La Quinta’s for example begin at 55, but Marriott’s commence at 62 years.

Food.  Not only will you find senior reductions on food to contribute to your cheapest method to travel, but these discount rates will be available in your hometown dining places.  How to find about a restaurant’s senior citizen discounts would be to call beforehand.

Travel.  Amtrak has discounted their fares for passengers over 62 years by as much as 15%.  Greyhound’s discount rates are for the equivalent ages, but are typically only 5% off, but do service more places than Amtrak.  Numerous rental car companies offer senior discounts, but by using AARP or AAA membership senior discounts can lead to still better rates.  They can be used for free upgrades.  Since 2009, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Air are the two last commercial airlines that still offer senior discount rates, as the majority of domestic airlines dropped their discounts for seniors.   For local transportation, discounts for seniors can be found in several places, but when you buy on premises it’s best to go to the ticket vendors and ask for the cheapest way to travel.

The age that you may reap the benefits of senior discounts vary, usually from as little as 55 years to as old as 65.  In Europe, I’ve noticed that senior discounts in Great Britain usually begin at 62, but in Germany the age is 65 years for discounts for seniors.  To get the cheapest method to travel, I would suggest AARP, as their signup fee is small to join the program, but you’re eligible for their pretty substantial benefits at 50 years of age.

The point is, to get the best deals on trips to Europe or planning a vacation to Florida, you can make your money go much farther when you plan ahead, and use senior citizen discounts at every opportunity.
