What You Can Do in Destin, Florida

Destin, Florida Is about Sun and Water

What started as a small fishing town in the northwest area of Florida has now developed into a fast-developing vacationer destination.  Like a whole lot of Florida, water and sunshine are the focal points.  Their beaches are really outstanding, but there is more with it.  Add in the undeniable fact that it’s much nearer to drive to as opposed to the majority of Florida should you be traveling from the west and Midwest, and you have the ingredients for a popular destination for families in addition to couples just wanting a calming weekend.

1.    Beaches.  Clear, emerald-hued water and white sand highlight the beaches of Destin.  Grayton Beach State Park, situated between Destin and Panama City Beach, offers fishing, snorkeling, camping and swimming.  The salt marshes, crystal-white sands and dunes provides it a consistent ranking as one of the most pristine and exquisite beaches in the United States.

2.    Fishing.  Based on the time of year, Destin has some of the best off-shore fishing on the gulf.  Sharks, sailfish, tuna and marlin may be caught off-shore, and grouper and snapper are around the reef.  The top off-shore fishing occurs around 27 miles southwest of Destin, and August through October is considered the most productive months.  Boats can be chartered for half-day, all-day and overnight, and make certain you own a license to fish.

3.    Blackwater River.  Outside of Destin a little, this is one of the unseen secrets in the area.  Blackwater River stands out as the purest river anywhere in Florida and rated fourth most pure in the nation.  It’s a place where locals canoe, tube and kayak in the tea-colored waters.  The darkness is actually from the tannins in the foliage of the juniper, pine, cedar and cypress which drop into the river.  The average deepness of the river is only approximately three feet, but has a lot of eddies that can be somewhat deeper.

4.    Sunsets.  People in Destin say their sunsets are better than those in Key West, which is renowned for its sunsets.  The sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico gets pretty spectacular, and it is alleged there are no two which are alike.

5.    Entertainment.  Combine those sunsets along with a dining experience on a dinner cruise.  You’ll be able to have dinner and dancing on the Gulf with these beautiful sunsets as a background, and since the area is fast becoming a preferred tourist vacation spot, there is a wonderful choice of ships to select from.  It’s as well become a venue for weddings, with facilities available for receptions aboard these ships.

6.    Golf.  Twelve excellent golf clubs are in the region, with three of them offering more than 18 holes.  Nearly all of them offer golf club rentals, and perhaps the very best of the courses may be the Regatta Bay Golf & Country Club in Destin.  This public, championship golf course gets rated by Golf Digest as among the top 200 courses to play in North America.
